A Hundred Thousand in Medieval Castle
Over a hundred thousand viewers watched an open-air event, based on historical facts last weekend in Malbork, Poland. In 1410, after the victorious battle of Grunwald, Polish - Lithuanian troops led by King Wladyslaw Jagiello marched from the battlefield of Grunwald towards the Teutonic fortress of Malbork. The siege lasted two months, but the castle remained in Teutonic hands. Another attempt to conquer the castle took place in 1454. The event was a reconstruction of the siege from 1410, 1454, 1457-1460. The spectators were taken back to the Middle Ages, where they could meet knights, merchants and craftsmen. The event lasted three days and was accompanied by numerous attractions inside the castle: a knights' camp, medieval crafts fair, concerts, horse riding tournaments and knights' taverns with refreshments. Malbork is the biggest European medieval castle. |
